SPH V.O.I.C.E.S. EVENTS 2008-2009
  • Pizza part at Hope Community Outreach Center in Camden for summer campers with face painter, t-shirt decorating, jump rope contests, & lots & lots of pizza & watermelon.

  • "Bowling for Soup—Hunger in Our Midst” Students, faculty and staff made crock pots of soup and sold it at lunchtime in the School of Public Health. Soup was served in hand- painted bowls. The empty bowls were meant to remind people that many people in our community are hungry. Proceeds from the fall event went to Elijah Promise Soup Kitchen and Hope Outreach in Camden.

  • November 24, 2008, Dr. Terry Konn spoke with students about her experiences in Rowanda on her Fulbright.

  • Hearts to Save Hearts! In the week before Valentines’ Day, VOICES sold heart shaped candy & cookies. All proceeds went to the American Heart Association- Red Dress event.

  • In the fall, V.O.I.C.E.S.’ student Suzie Yang organized a diaper drive for Hudson Cradle. Over 2,000 diapers were collected for babies living at Hudson Cradle. Hudson Cradle is a group home in Jersey City providing care to homeless infants with special health and developmental needs.

  • V.O.I.C.E.S. students partnered with the Camden AHEC and organized a “Socks & Underwear” collection. Camden AHEC supports the needle exchange project in Camden.

  • V.O.I.C.E.S. partnered with HomeFront in Trenton & organized a “Holiday gift drive.” We helped fill the holiday wish lists of 10 homeless children who live in motels along the Rt. 1 corridor.

  • V.O.I.C.E.S. students set up the “DR Giving Tree” and collecting small personal care items for the Dominican Republic Health Outreach Project.

  • In January 2009, V.O.I.C.E.S. students prepared dinner for families at the Ronald McDonald House in New Brunswick.

  • In February, V.O.I.C.E.S. students went to the food pantry in the basement of Christ Episcopal Church in New Brunswick & helped with the Annual Survey of the Homeless. They also distributed bags of groceries to families. Throughout the year many V.O.I.C.E.S. students volunteered with the food pantry.

  • A number of V.O.I.C.E.S. students participated in Undergrad Mentoring—at Rutgers.

  • On June 27, 2009, V.O.I.C.E.S. students, faculty and staff went to Neptune, NJ where they helped paint a house in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

  • SPH V.O.I.C.E.S. hosted a fall 2008 Art Show highlighting the artwork of Haitian children in the Dominican Republic.

  • SPH V.O.I.C.E.S. students led the Public Health Club at New Brunswick Health Sciences High school in New Brunswick.
